The Phonics Screening Check is a compulsory test which tests Year 1 students on their knowledge of the phonics skills they’ve learnt throughout the year to see whether their phonic decoding skills are at an appropriate standard.

1. Use the Phonics Screening Check Topic Tool
Perfect for creating a practical check for real and alien words, the Phonics Screening Check Topic Tool helps students with the learning of phonics. Here’s how:
- Flexible for teachers: you can select the words to include in the test (CVC, CVCC, etc.) which means it’s super simple to personalise it to your class’ needs.
- Perfect for test prep: the tool follows the format of the test itself, with the use of aliens for identifying pseudo words, and words can be printed out as flashcards for practice too.
- Easily track students’ progress: as the test will pull a list of the words read correctly and incorrectly, you can view your students’ strengths and weaknesses quickly.
To find the Topic Tool, use the Search bar or find it in the English module in the following levels:
- England: Year 1 and 2
2. Use the Phonics Dictionary Topic Tool
Fantastic for reinforcing phonic knowledge to decode words and for investigating phonemes and graphemes, the Phonics Dictionary is great practice for the test. Here’s how:
- Select a sound from the Phoneme Bank: as you can choose from a range of sounds, you can focus on the ones your students are really struggling on.
- Listen to the sounds: with the tool, you can hear words being sounded out with emphasis on phonemes – fab for recall.
To access the tool, just use the Search bar or get it in the English module in the following levels:
- England: Year 1
3. Use the Phonics Activities
There is a whole range of engaging, enjoyable phonics Activities in the English module that are available via three programmes: Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics and Read Write. They’re great for phonics practice. Here’s how:
- Fun, engaging animation: Activities have enjoyable, interactive animation to engage younger students.
- Track students’ progress: you can track your class’ Activity scores from completed phonics content in the Student Scores report to easily identify strengths and weaknesses.
The Phonics Activities can be found in the English modules when you select the following levels:
- England: F1, F2 & Year 1
