The winter solstice takes place on the shortest day of the year when there are the fewest daylight hours and the sun is at its lowest in the horizon. The winter solstice represents the first day of winter. In the U.S., this is on December 21st or 22nd.
After the winter solstice, the days get longer until the summer solstice, when they start to get shorter again. The winter solstice has been celebrated since ancient times and is still celebrated today.
