Although it doesn’t come into force until September 2014, the new Primary Curriculum will be released to schools early this coming autumn term to give schools a year to prepare.
One of the most significant changes will be the statutory requirement to teach Foreign Languages at Key Stage 2. Schools will need to choose to teach either a modern language, so German, French, Spanish, Italian or Mandarin, or one of the ancient languages, Ancient Greek or Latin. The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication, while for Latin or Ancient Greek, the aim will be to provide a linguistic foundation for learning modern languages and for reading comprehension.
At EducationCity.com, we already provide colourful, engaging content for German, French and Spanish, which would support pupils to:
- understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing,
- talk and write about familiar and routine matters,
- develop their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary
- build solid foundations for further foreign language learning at Key Stage 3.
But what will you be teaching?
Will you be greeting your students at the start of term in September 2014 with, ‘Bonjour’, ‘Buenos dias’, ‘Zǎoshàng hǎo’, ‘Buongiorno’, ‘Guten Morgen,’ Salve’ or even ‘Ὑπιαίνετε!’?
